Screenwriters Association of India (SWA) and Netflix are celebrating Pride month with a discussion on how writing can help reflect everyone’s lives on screen. Hear how this panel of writers and filmmakers think about inclusion in Indian entertainment and discuss the craft and development of LGBTQ+ stories and characters.

Shakun Batra

Shakun Batra is an Indian filmmaker and writer.  He made his Bollywood directorial debut with the movie, Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu (2012) , followed by Kapoor and Sons (2016). Previously he has also worked as an assistant director on Jaane Tu…Ya Jaane Na (2008), Rock On!! (2008) and Don 2 (2011).


Onir is an Indian filmmaker, editor, screenwriter and producer. He is best known for his film My Brother…Nikhil, based on the life of Dominic D’Souza, starring Sanjay Suri, Juhi Chawla and Purab Kohli. It was one of the first mainstream Hindi films to deal with AIDS and same-sex relationships. He won the Indian National Film awards for Best Film (Hindi) for the anthology “I AM” in 2011. Together with Sanjay Suri, Onir started Anticlock Films, a production company that will concentrate on promoting young directors. His last release was “Kuchh Bheege Alfaaz” which is currently streaming on Netflix.

Sridhar Rangayan

Sridhar Rangayan wears many caps – of a filmmaker, writer, activist and festival director. He has consistently strived to give a voice to social issues in India through his films, writings and public speaking for over two decades. His award winning films The Pink Mirror, Yours Emotionally, 68 Pages, Project Bolo, Purple Skies, Breaking Free and Evening Shadows present hard-hitting social issues with warmth, compassion and humor; and are at the forefront of India’s emergent queer cinema movement. He is the Founder Festival Director of KASHISH Mumbai International Queer Film Festival, South Asia’s biggest LGBTQIA+ film festival and the most well known in India for the past 10 years.

Arjun Mathur

Arjun Mathur is an Indian actor, popularly known for his roles in Made in Heaven, Brij Mohan Amar Rahe!, I am, Barah Ana and various other critically acclaimed and national award-winning movies.

Srishti Arya

Srishti Arya is Director for International Original Film- India at Netflix, the world’s leading internet entertainment service. Behl Arya, who joined Netflix in May 2018, is focused on building a diverse original film catalogue with titles such as Chopsticks, Yeh Ballet, Guilty and critically acclaimed anthology Lust Stories. Srishti started her career with an advertising agency but soon turned into an independent producer in the Indian film industry. Some of her early productions include Angaarey and Bas Itna Sa Khwab Hai. Alongside, Srishti also ventured into television series production and shepherded creative programming for various scripted shows such as Lipstick (Zee), Remix (Star), Dekha Ek Khwaab (Sony). She has served two terms, first as treasurer and then Vice President of the Producers Guild of India and has been a core member of IFTPC (Indian Film and Television Producers Council).


Aniruddha Mahale

A former TEDx speaker, Aniruddha Mahale is a writer who also runs the Guysexual, a portal for queer culture in the desi context. He also runs a column with FirstPost, and has worked on commissioned pieces with GQ, VICE and LifestyleAsia India. Having previously published with Juggernaut Books, Aniruddha is currently working on a comprehensive queer dating guide with Harper Collins.
