SWA and WIFPA sign an MoU

In its endeavour to establish amiable as well as mutually beneficial work relationships with producers’ organisations, SWA has added another feather in its cap. The Association has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Western Indian Film Producers Association (WIFPA). This agreement, signed by Shri Sunil Salgia and Shri Dilip Dalvi –  General Secretaries of SWA and WIFPA, respectively, will enable smooth functioning of a Joint Dispute Settlement Committee (JDSC) between the two bodies. The MoU broadly covers the following pointers:

  1. SWA and WIFPA will jointly resolve any disputes and claims arising amongst its members and extend support to each other to take a strong action against its respective members who are found guilty of any proven instances of default.
  2. Upon receiving a complaint against a member of the other association, the complainant’s association will immediately inform the respondent’s association of the same.
  3. Both the organisations will set up Joint Dispute Settlement Committee (JDSC) meetings to hear such above complaints and jointly resolve the dispute.
  4. Decisions of the JDSC shall be binding on the complainant and respondent.
  5. If the JDSC is unable to arrive at a consensus, the respective associations may guide their concerned members regarding how to proceed with the matter.
  6. Both the associations will ensure compliance of their respective members to the decisions of JDSC. In case a member of either association refuses to comply then, the association of the defaulting member shall take a strict disciplinary action.

SWA and CINTAA sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU)

As per the announcement made in the second week of September, the Screenwriters Association (SWA) and Cine and Television Artistes Association (CINTAA) have now signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). This agreement, agreed and accepted by Shri Sunil Salgia and Shri Sushant Singh –  General Secretaries of SWA and CINTAA, respectively, will address all kinds of violations, be it sexual harassment, copyright infringement, payment or breach of contract involving the members of both the Associations.

The following are the salient pointers of the MoU:

SWA and CINTAA will collaborate with each other and stand in solidarity regarding any issues involving the welfare and well-being of its members. Especially, if any representation to the government or other authority is required in this regard, SWA and CINTAA shall support each other’s representation before such authority.

  • SWA and CINTAA will take the required steps and efforts to educate its members regarding good practices to be observed in the industry, particularly, to uphold and respect the rights and dignity of other members (specifically including but not limited to sexual harassment, copyright violation and/or non-payment of dues) and where necessary, collaborate in organizing, arranging and conducting programmes, workshops and seminars or any other kinds of events for imparting such education and awareness among its respective members.
  • In case of any proven instances of misconduct against or breach of any rights of the members of SWA or CINTAA, relating to or occurring during their course of discharge of professional work and duties, both the associations shall extend support to each other and stand in solidarity with each other to condemn all such proven instances of wrongdoings.
  • In case of any disputes between the members of both the associations, the parties shall arrange a joint meeting of their respective Dispute Settlement Committees. The members concerning such dispute from both the associations shall have a moral obligation to attend the Joint DSC meetings taking place between the signing associations.
  • If members of either association violate the rights or dignity of the members of the other association, the concerned association of the defaulter member shall take all measures to encourage and/or compel its defaulter member to participate in the mediation process of the complainant’s association. If such defaulter member refuses or refrains from participating in the dispute resolution process of the complainant’s association, or if the dispute resolution body of the complainant’s association finds that the defaulter member is indeed in default, then the defaulter member’s association shall take strict action against such defaulter for such wrongdoings.
  • The dispute settlement body of the complainant’s association shall have the jurisdiction to conduct mediation if the complaint is pertaining to the particular craft of the association and the defaulter member’s association shall respect and abide by the findings and decision of the complainant’s association. (e.g. if the dispute has arisen in the complainant’s capacity as a writer or in the course of work of the complainant providing his/her services as a writer, then SWA’s dispute settlement body shall have the jurisdiction to entertain the dispute; vice versa for CINTAA if the dispute arises out of the complainant’s course of work as an artist or in relation to the complainant’s services as an artist).
  • If the dispute concerns the members of both the associations in their capacities as a writer and artist, then, the defaulter member shall have the right to request the representation of their association in the dispute settlement process, in which case, there may be a JDSC meeting to resolve the dispute. However, such JDSC meeting shall not take place for any complaints pertaining to sexual harassment. Complaints pertaining to sexual harassment shall strictly be handled by the concerned association of the aggrieved person.
  • Wherever mutually beneficial, the associations shall collaborate and provide support to each other for any other matters not specifically mentioned herein. The parties are free to add any further points to the MOU as and when required through mutual consent. (This MOU shall not be a commitment of funds to either party on behalf of the other party or any disclosure or transfer of intellectual property rights, or any other proprietary information.)

Rest In Peace, Sushma Swaraj Ji!

1920 X 800 Sushma Swaraj

We at the Screenwriters Association express our heartfelt grief at the sudden demise of Late Sushri Sushma Swaraj (14 February 1952 – 6 August 2019). She succumbed to a cardiac arrest following a heart attack on the night of 6 August.

Swaraj was a renowned Supreme Court lawyer and one of the few politicians admired for fair-mindedness and simplicity. Starting early, at the age of 25 in 1977, she became the youngest cabinet minister of the Indian state of Haryana, and followed it later with becoming the second woman, after Indira Gandhi, to become the Minister of External Affairs India, in 2014.

With our grief-stricken hearts, we express our sincere most gratitude to Swaraj for lending her voice and support to the fight for the rights of screenwriter, lyricists, music composer and singers by endorsing the Copyright Act (2012 Amendment) in the Loksabha. This bill was introduced with the primary objective of ensuring fair revenue sharing to protect the rights of owners (creators and authors) of the copyright, who provide license for any dramatic, artistic, musical or literary work incorporated in cinematic or sound recording form. The bill was tabled in the Rajya Sabha on April 19, 2012 by renowned lyricist and cinema writer Shri Javed Akhtar, which was then sent to the Standing Committee. However, the fight for a fair share in revenue and royalty for the creators of scripts and songs faced severe challenges from a section of parliamentarians leaning towards a lobby of producers who did not want this bill to pass. Under these circumstances Sushma Swaraj, as the leader of opposition, vehemently supported this bill and emphatically urged the house to vote in its favour.

Honorary General Secretary Shri Sunil Salgia expresses his warmest of regards with these following words: “In Parliament, we often see the opposition taking a stand to stall the bills proposed by the ruling party. On the contrary, Sushma ji stood in support of creative artists and gave a historic speech in 2012 to support of the bill. This was an exceptional gesture on her part which I will never forget.”

Shri Javed Akhtar, who was at the forefront of the fight to get the Copyright Amendment Act 2012 passed and currently serves as the Chairman of IPRS (Indian Performing Rights Society), tweets the following: “Deeply saddened by Sushma ji’s demise. The Music Fraternity will be indebted to her for magnificent defence of their rights in the Lok Sabha. You were an exceptional person Sushmaji. We will always remain thankful to you.”

The Screenwriters Association and the whole fraternity of screenwriters and lyricists working film, TV and digital media shall be forever indebted to Late Sushma Swaraj for strengthened their cause of fair rights. May her soul rest in peace.

Screenwriting Workshop with Anjum Rajabali, in Pune (hosted by Living Bridge, in association with SWA)

Living Bridge Workshop, Aug 22-25, 2019
Our big Screenwriting Workshop is Back!

The last few years, especially 2018-19, have proved beyond doubt that without a good script – forget a good film – even a successful one is not possible today. On the other hand, so many ‘small’ films have had extraordinary runs simply because they had wonderful scripts backing them.No wonder then, that there’s a mad scramble in Mumbai for good scripts and for good writers, in every language.

Hence, we need more writers to up their game. By learning the craft of writing seriously, and by continuously upgrading it, polishing it.

Dates: August 22-25, 2019
Timings: 10:00 AM to 05:00 PM

Venue: MCCIA, Senapati Bapat Road, Pune, Maharashtra

Fees (inclusive of lunch & tea/coffee on all days): INR11500/-
Contact: +919890000587 / +919823131486
Email ID: learn@livingbridge.net
To Register, please visit: https://www.livingbridge.net/registration/

Limited Seats only!

Workshop Contents:

  • One day on the basics of screenwriting. Thinking up interesting PLOTS, discovering credible, empathetic CHARACTERS that breathe life into the plot. Giving an appropriate STRUCTURE to the screenplay. All this by referring to great examples.
  • One day dedicated just to SCENE DESIGN & DIALOGUE. Even with the best story and the most wonderful characters, your script can fail if your scenes are flat and your dialogue unnatural. We look at examples of wonderful scenes to learn how to write them.
  • Half a day on MYTHOLOGY, and how our two epics continue to influence modern Indian screenwriting and what can screenwriters learn from them.
  • Half a day on Joseph Campbell’s ‘HERO’S JOURNEY’ which offers rich insights into the underlying structures and rhythms of all forms of storytelling.
  • Half a day on ADAPTATION – how to create strong screenplays from existing sources like novels, stories, plays. Again with reference to good examples.
  • Two guest masterclasses. With SRIRAM RAGHAVAN (writer-director of Andhadhun) and with JUHI CHATURVEDI (writer of Piku, Vicky Donor)
  • One session on PROFESSIONAL GUIDANCE – contracts, fees, copyright, legal information, SWA’s role, etc.
Workshop Instructor:
Anjum Rajabali is one of India’s best known screenwriters and teachers, with over ten feature-film credits including Raajneeti, The Legend of Bhagat Singh, Ghulam and Drohkaal. He’s been a mentor at many Indian and international script labs and a script advisor and consultant for several well-known films, including Gangaajal, Mulk, Article 15. In 2004, he designed and set up the Screenplay Writing Course at FTII, and was its head for 12 years. Since 2006, he has been the head of screenwriting at Whistling Woods, Mumbai. Anjum regularly conducts screenwriting workshops, and has convened several national conferences, seminars, and fellowships on screenwriting. Anjum has been a senior activist at SWA since 2008.

10.00 to 10.45 AM – Breakfast

This special meeting has been called to review, assess and pass the new proposed amendments in the Constitution of the Association. The proposed amendments have been thoroughly discussed in the Executive Committee and are now recommended to the General Body to be adopted and passed.

Friends, since long it has been felt that we must assess and re-evaluate ourselves to cope with the fast changing scenario of the Indian and International film and television industry. We have to update the ways of working of the Association to face the new challenges of the media and entertainment industry.

This involved documenting and double-checking the validity of all the proposals to amend clauses therein, doing independent research by scouring though the different relevant laws. It took months of the time and effort of Executive Committee in general and the Constitution Amendment Sub-Committee in particular.

We are enclosing/attaching herewith the clauses of the 2016 Constitution, which are to be amended along with the proposed 2019 amendments.

If you have any suggestion regarding these amendments/or new amendments please send them to the office of the Association by 27th July 2019 on or before 5.00 p.m. Failing which the member’s suggestion and proposal will not be entertained in the Special General Body Meeting.

I request all of you to please attend the meeting positively because the Constitution is a very important document which reflects the hopes and aspirations of screenwriters and lyricists and the future agenda of Screenwriters Association. Such meetings also give us an opportunity to meet our friends of the fraternity.

With regards,
Yours faithfully
For Screenwriters Association

SWA announces Legal Aid Policy for its members!

This is indeed a big news! The Screenwriters Association has announced a Legal Aid Policy to help its member screenwriters fight their cases, related to Copyright infringement, breach of confidentiality, payments and credits; in court. This is a step in tune with SWA’s commitment to help its members defend their intellectual property, and get their due credits and remuneration.

Under this policy, the Association will pay 50 percent of the lawyer’s fee, or a definite amount (whichever is lower), as per the recommendations of its Dispute Settle Committee (DSC) and a panel of expert lawyers. The detailed guidelines for the same are being worked out. This provision will give power to aggrieved members seek justice legally, in a situation when they might want to approach the court but lack resources, after the DSC has decided in their favour.

It is also important to note that this new move is in addition with SWA appointing a full-time Copyright expert lawyer as its Legal Officer, at its office in Andheri West, to offer legal consultation to members absolutely free of cost. (All members seeking an appointment with SWA’s Legal Officer for legal consultation are requested to send an email to legal.officer@swaindia.org ). Moreover, SWA’s legal cell is also in contact with copyright lawyers who’re willing to offer their services at concessional rates to screenwriters.

The need for legal aid was being felt for a long time. The DSC had recommended for it as there have been cases in which the committee would feel limited in helping out the complainant members who have been wronged by producers, directors or even fellow members. In fact, there have been more than four dozen cases, pending with the erstwhile Joint-DSC-Committee formed by SWA and the Federation of Western Indian Cine Employees (FWICE). After SWA disaffiliated itself from the Federation, the need to strengthen the DSC also seemed immediate.

SWA partners for ‘The Content Hub – The New Era of Content’

Platforms – both television and OTT ‐ are hungering after content, making this the best time for
content creators ever. But this growing maw brings with it its own challenges. The old model of commissioning and line production by producers without any share of the IP for the latter has been running in the broadcast sector for long now.

In this new era of content creation, newer models are needed. What could these be? What challenges will they bring?

What are the new streams of monetization that content producers and creators and broadcasters and platforms can bank on?

What business models are working in different international markets? Are there any successful new case studies worth talking about?

How are the older producers and creators evolving? Who are the newer producers who are making a mark?

How big is the syndication, licensing and merchandising opportunity? Which geographies?

This and several others are questions we are seeking answers for during the third edition of
Indiantelevision.com’s The Content Hub – The New Era of Content, which is set to be a path breaking get together of the country’s leading content makers, platforms and creators and is intended to sow thought leadership seeds for the new era of content creation.

As a Community Partner for the event, the Screenwriters Association recommends that all writers and lyricists working, or interested in working, for television attend this event.

The Screenwriters Association is always keen to help its members realise the dream of telling their stories and build their careers. This time, we’re happy to extend support to Star Writers Program as a way of helping aspiring writers find an opportunity to enter the television industry.

Here are the salient features of this program:

  • This program is designed by Star India to provide a professional writing course for television series in India.
  • This program was started in 2016 and it is currently one of India’s most immersive course in television writing.
  • In its third season now, Star invites all aspiring writers to build on their skills through an intensive seven month course in screenwriting.
  • To get selected, the registrants have to submit the two Writing Challenges on the website: Story Challenge and Scene and Dialogue Challenge. Each completed application is read by a panel of professional screenwriters, before participants are finalised for the next round to be held in Mumbai.
  • Each year, the program receives over thousands of applications. The selected applicants are invited for Mumbai Challenge, a 2-day event in Mumbai (travel and stay to be sponsored by Star). At this event, participants learn storytelling techniques and meet the team in person.
  • On the basis of the submissions and personal interviews held during the Mumbai Challenge, final 15 students are chosen for the program.
  • The trainees inducted into the program earn a stipend of INR 70,000 per month during the 7-month training (5 month classroom+2 month internship) and on successful graduation, they get a 2 year writing contract with Star to work on their biggest shows.
  • This year the classes are expected to start in August 1st week.

5-Day Screenwriting Workshop by Anjum Rajabali

To help SWA members, and non-members, further their craft and build their writing careers, is one of the primary aims and objectives of SWA.
Mumbai based film school Whistling Woods International, in association with SWA, is organising 5-Day Screenwriting Workshop, conducted by Anjum Rajabali (veteran screenwriter and senior EC member of SWA) from February 6-10, 2019, at WWI Campus
screenwriting poster
Here’s what in store for the participants, at the workshop:
Screenwriting has been in the news for almost all of 2018. And, for all the right reasons. Several ‘small’ non-star-driven films performed fabulously, purely because they had wonderful scripts. (Some big ones tanked, owing to weak writing.) Web series, powered primarily by good writing, are making waves continuously. The first edition of Cinestaan India’s Storytellers Script Contest rewarded five new screenwriters with cash prizes totaling Rs. 50 lakh! (The second edition is open right now.) And, of course, the quest for good scripts by studios, production houses and web platforms is going into overdrive.
Imperative then, that more people take to this craft, and equally important that we continue to polish and upgrade our skills.
This workshop covers both these objectives: Guide new writers into kick-starting their screenwriting seriously, and also serve as a refresher to practicing writers. , by interacting with the workshop instructor and the other guests who will come to share their writing experiences. For both kind of participants, it should be an enriching experience.
Like always, this workshop will serve as a basic but comprehensive guide to all the essential elements of the screenwriting craft, and then some more. Topics will include:
– How does one formulate the CENTRAL IDEA for a script, and draw dramatic power from it to fuel the full narrative? How does it continue to open up, creating challenging twists for the characters?
– Developing this central idea into a PLOT. What is a good plot? How the action plot facilitates the thematic or emotional plot to emerge and bloom.
– CHARACTER – the factor that gives life to your story and script, thereby making the viewing experience an involving one. How does one encourage the viewer to develop a bond of empathy with the characters such that the viewer begins to feel for them. Creating interesting but credible characters.
– Often a wonderful story, with interesting characters, falls flat because the STRUCTURE of the screenplay was problematic. Hence, it’s essential for us to be mindful of the design that we’re giving our scripts.
– If everything else works, but the SCENES are not crafted well, the entire effort takes a toss. We can learn from good examples how scenes can be crisp and impactful, and develop our own style for achieving that.
– Last, but obviously not the least – DIALOGUE! Difficult to be taught this, but every screenwriter will have to come up with crackling stuff here. Once again, examples can be inspiring, and a great source of learning.
– Archetypal characters and conflicts from MYTHOLOGY continue to find centrality in modern scripts. So, it will certainly help to examine what is mythology really about, and why does it exercise such influence on our imagination, and how does it actually help and enrich our screenwriting.
– Today, a professional screenwriter has to be a quasi-lawyer! There will be a substantial session on COPYRIGHT LAW, on WRITERS’ RIGHTS, on CAREER GUIDANCE & STRATEGY (especially on how to approach producers, conduct meetings, etc.). We shall bring in agents and a lawyer, plus a senior official of SWA to guide you and answer all your queries.
– This time we have five GUEST SESSIONS with special writers like Vishal Bhardwaj, Juhi Chaturvedi, Sriram Raghavan (and the co-writers of Andhadhun), the writers of Badhai Ho and Stree, and three writers of web series – Smita Singh (Sacred Games), Puneet Krishna (Mirzapur) and Hardik Mehta (The Story of my Assassins).

Dear Writer-Member.

Greetings from SWA!

Recently, we have noticed some rather silly rumours floating around, spread with the clear intention of spreading some lies about your Association. This is not a new phenomenon. In fact, every time a person or an organisation tries to do good work, there will always be envious people trying to discredit them.

However, we don’t want you to be anxious or concerned about any of this. So, to clear the air, here are the facts:

  1. It was SWA that informed the Federation (FWICE), in early 2018, that it has chosen to disaffiliate itself. While we have always respected the Federation, and continue to do so, we feel that since it is responsible for more than 2 lakh workers in our industry, its energies should focus on their issues, which are very important and urgent. It is unfair of unions like SWA, which represent professionals, to push their agenda as a priority on FWICE. That will just dilute FWICE’s efforts towards those workers.

Hence, with a very courteous letter, we informed them that we will not be the Federation’s affiliates, but will continue to work in parallel with them. Moreover, whenever there is a struggle for justice that concerns the entire industry, we shall most certainly stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the Federation, strongly.

So don’t pay any heed to the rumours that the Federation has disaffiliated us. In fact, you may be aware that the union of actors – CINTAA – too has disaffiliated from FWICE.

  1. Another silly rumour being spread is that after SWA’s disaffiliation from FWICE, its members cannot work in the Film and TV industry. This is patently false and mischievous. Do know that no person or union can stop you from working here.

Actually, after the strike of 2015, some producers had filed a complaint with the Competition Commission of India (CCI) urging it to stop the practice that only union members affiliated to the Federation can work in the film and TV industries. The CCI in its order termed this practice as monopolistic declaring it illegal, and threatened very strict action if any individual, regardless of her/his affiliation or membership is stopped from working in this industry.

  1. Friends, SWA is a strong union that was established in 1954, by stalwarts like Ramanand Sagar, Khwaja Ahmad Abbas, Shailendra, Sahir Ludhianvi, Majrooh Sultanpuri and Kamal Amrohi. It continues to gain strength. On the legal front, your Association has a full-time copyright lawyer as its Legal Officer to offer free legal advice and guidance to all members for their contracts and complaints. Moreover, the Dispute Settlement Committee (DSC) continues to vigorously take up all genuine complaints by our members.

A new and truly wonderful development is that SWA will soon offer legal support too to those members who may need to approach the court, after the DSC has decided in their favour. The detailed guidelines for the same are being worked out, which we shall announce very soon. This will give more concrete power to aggrieved members to seek justice legally.

  1. SWA has been organizing regular activities and events like Workshops, Conferences, Seminars, Vartaalaaps, other interesting events and initiatives to educate and enlighten our members. Our collaboration with worthy organisations for Contests, Pitching Programmes, LitFests, Fellowships, Scholarships will continue in higher gears.

All in all, please be assured that SWA continues its efforts for you vigorously, as a proactive and vigilant union. So, please dismiss any silly rumours from any individual or organisation that seeks to mislead you about SWA. And, if you have any questions or doubts, at any time, about anything, please reach out to us by dropping an email or visiting our office. We shall promptly clear the air for you.

We believe that those people spreading rumours about SWA have formed a parallel association and are exhorting writers to join that. It is of course your democratic right to join any association that you believe is good for you. However, do know that, as per SWA’s constitution, our members cannot simultaneously belong to any other writers’ association.

With you, for you, always –

On behalf of the Executive Committee of SWA,

Sunil Salgia (Hon. Gen. Secretary)

Rest In Peace, William Goldman!

William Goldman (August 12, 1931 – November 16, 2018)

Internationally acclaimed American novelist, playwright, and two-times Academy Award winner screenwriter,  William Goldman passed away on November 16, 2018, in New York. He was 87 and had been suffering from colon cancer and pneumonia.

Goldman, who had won Academy Awards (popularly known as the Oscars) for films ‘Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid’ (1969, Best Original Screenplay) and ‘All the President’s Men’ (1976, Best Adapted Screenplay), was considered one of the late twentieth century’s most popular storytellers and a Hollywood genius. His other prominent works include his thriller novel ‘Marathon Man’ and the comedy-fantasy novel ‘The Princess Bride’, both of which Goldman also adapted for the film versions.

William Goldman had several box-office hits under his belt and was a much sought-after script doctor. He was also popular for coining iconic phrases like “Follow the money” and “Nobody knows anything”.’ For a lot of international screenwriters, as well as a whole generation of young Indian screenwriters, Goldman happened to be a great source of inspiration.

The Screenwriters Association, Mumbai, is deeply saddened by the demise of William Goldman  and prays for his soul to rest in peace.

"Writing is finally about one thing: going into a room alone and doing it.
Putting words on paper that have never been there in quite that way before.
And although you are physically by yourself, the haunting Demon never leaves you,
that Demon being the knowledge of your own terrible limitations,
your hopeless inadequacy, the impossibility of ever getting it right.
No matter how diamond-bright your ideas are dancing in your brain,
on paper they are earthbound."

- William Goldman

SWA organises Gender Sensitisation Workshop by Paromita Vohra

For FB - gender sensitisation

Feminist ideas always show up as an exception in Hindi films – or most films for that matter. It is crisis, revolution, morality play around themes of rape, dowry, divorce, revenge, victimhood or heroism. But does a feminist film always come waving a flag? Or can we imagine it more interestingly, more true to life, more humorous and sexy with more smarts and heart? Could Hindi Masala RomCom be more feminist than a film about feminism? Are songs and beauty, love and interiority full of feminist possibility (Yes!)? Can we write different female characters without writing different male characters? Can we re-conceptualise ‘issue-based films’? In other words – can we imagine an effortless feminism? One that is part of every kind of film?

Paromita Vohra Photo-Milan Gupta

MPA-APSA felicitates ‘Launch Your Script’ 2018 finalists

Screenwriters Association (SWA), Motion Picture Association (MPA) and Asia Pacific Screen Awards (APSA) launched a joint script development outreach program, ‘Launch Your Script’, 2018, in India earlier this year to enable Indian screenwriters to showcase their work on a global platform.

L–R: Saiwyn Quadras, Screenwriter, Meenakshi Shedde, APSA Academy Member, Suman Mukho-padhyay, Filmmaker, Lohita Sujith, MPA, India, Anubhav Chopra, LATC Global Film and TV program winner, Swara Bhaskar, Actor, Debashish Irengbam and Anjum Rajabali, SWA

To mark the success of ‘Launch Your Script’, 2018, SWA hosted a felicitation ceremony for the LATC Global Film and TV program winner, Anubhav Chopra for his entry titled “Phurrr” and the twelve finalists of the outreach program on October 24th 2018 at the SWA office in Andheri (W).

Swara Bhaskar, actor known for her roles in films such as Tanu Weds ManuRanjhanaa, and the recently released Veere Di Wedding and Saiwyn Quadras, writer of popular films such as NeerjaMary Kom and Parmanu – the story of Pokhran were the Chief Guests. Also in attendance, were members from the MPA’s India office, SWA, senior APSA Academy members and Suman Mukhopadhyay, recipient of the 2017 MPA APSA Academy Film Fund grant.

The objective of the outreach program was to open doors for SWA members and screenwriters across the country to compete in the 2018 MPA APSA Academy Film Fund. After receiving over 600 entries and going through multiple rounds of evaluation, SWA and the selection committee comprising APSA Academy members: Rajit Kapur, Mayank Tewari, Leena Yadav, Rajan Khosa and Meenakshi Shedde shortlisted twelve finalists whose entries stand a chance to win a script development grant of USD 25,000 during the 12th Asia Pacific Screen Awards, to be held in Brisbane, Australia in November this year.

Chair of the Asia Pacific Screen Awards and its Academy Michael Hawkins said, “The MPA APSA Academy Film Fund has seen phenomenal success in 2018 with finished projects premiering at Cannes, Venice and beyond. APSA applauds SWA and MPA India for their extensive outreach in support of the initiative, which in 2017 saw one of the applicants through this process, Suman Mukhopadhyay, become one of the four successful MPA Film Fund recipients. We look forward to seeing a strong number of applicants again in 2018.”

Mike Ellis, President and Managing Director, Motion Picture Association, Asia Pacific said, “ “We are delighted to partner once again with the Screen Writers Association of India and the Asia Pacific Screen Awards in this enterprising program that offers screenwriters an avenue to secure significant support for a new feature film project. In 2017, Suman Mukhopadhyay’s project Paradise in Flames, went on to receive one of the four USD$25,000 script development grants. The project is now well advanced in the development stage. The MPA APSA Academy Film Fund is now recognized as a world-class initiative for kick-starting exciting stories from every corner of the Asia Pacific.”

Chief Guest of the event, Swara Bhaskar said, “A script is where the depth of a character lies. No matter how hard an actor tries, there has to be something more in the writing for the character and the plot to stand out and be real. Now that I’m writing a script myself, I can also empathize with the struggle and hard work of the process of script writing.”

Speaking about the collaboration, Anjum Rajabali, veteran screenwriter and Executive Committee Member, SWA said, “The Screenwriters Association is privileged to have been invited to associate with the Asia Pacific Screen Awards and the Motion Picture Association in this ‘Launch Your Script’ initiative since 2017. SWA congratulates its member, Anubhav Chopra for emerging as the winner of the prestigious LATC Global Film and TV program for 2018. Rest In Peace, Kalpana Lajmi!

Kalpna Lajmi

Veteran writer-director Kalpana Lajmi (4 May 1954 – 23 September 2018) passed away in Mumbai due to kidney failure, an ailment she had been suffering from for some time prior to her death.

Unconventional and uncompromising, Lajmi was a noted film maker who focussed on projects with strong, women-oriented themes.  The subjects of her films were hard hitting, gritty and realistic and she can be rightly hailed as one of the trailblazers of parallel cinema.  She was the niece of Guru Dutt and was also related to Shyam Benegal, with whom she began her film career as assistant costume designer on his movie, ‘Bhumika.’

Kalpana Lajmi worked on a few select projects only during her short film career, most often as director. However, she is also credited with writing the scripts of ‘Ek Pal’, ‘Rudaali’ and ‘Daman’; the latter two went on to be strongly hailed by critics. Under her capable directorial guidance, two actresses went on to win the National Award for ‘Best Actress’; Dimple Kapadia for ‘Rudaali’ and Raveena Tandon for ‘Daman.’ Her last film was ‘Chingaar’ which she wrote, directed and produced.

Rudaali (1993)

Lajmi was said to be close to celebrated Assamese singer, Bhupen Hazarika, who composed the music for all her films. She had stated in an interview to a film magazine that her health started to decline after his death and that writing a memoir on him (Bhupen Hazarika: As I Knew Him) made her relive the trauma, which caused her health to decline even further.

The Screenwriters Association feels saddened by the demise of Kalpana Lajmi and prays for her
soul to rest in peace.
