REST IN PEACE, SUSHANT SINGH RAJPUT! (A letter from Hon. General Secretary of SWA)

597AD029-EC67-4C78-BE35-716B4664384B

Date: 14-06-2020

Dear writer friends,

We are deeply shocked and grieved by the untimely demise of actor Sushant Singh Rajput (1986-2020). We express our sorrow and condolences, on behalf of all SWA members.

This incident has made us reflect, yet again, about the various mental health issues many of us have to go through in our daily lives.

We all know that giving up is not the right thing. We must make the best of the life that is offered to us. And yet, many of us find it really difficult to carry on.

This is why we, as a society at large and a creative community in particular, need to drastically improve awareness about mental health. SWA is organising webinars with expert doctors on these issues, one of which will take place this Friday. (Read more: swaindia.org/blog/psychotherapy_webinar )

Further, keeping in mind the mental and emotional strain this pandemic and lockdown has caused amongst us, SWA realises the need to reach out and seek help or just a listening ear.

Thus, we would like to share the following helpline information with our members. These are toll-free support helpline initiatives launched by the government for anyone who needs assistance in dealing with their mental/emotional health concerns.

800-120-820050: ‘BMC-Mpower 1on1’  (available 24×7). Launched by “Mpower”, a pioneer in Indian mental healthcare has partnered with Government of Maharashtra and the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)

08046110007: Launched by National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro-Sciences (NIMHANS), Bangalore, in partnership with the Government of India.

Stay strong, stay safe!

Yours truly

Sunil Salgia

Hon. General Secretary

Advanced Scriptwriting Lectures by Anjum Rajabali

A COVID-19 Fundraiser event organised by SWA

13, 14, 20, 21 June 2020 | 10.00 AM to 2:00 PM

MEDIUM OF INSTRUCTION: A mix of HINDI and ENGLISH, in equal proportion.

SESSION 1: Understanding Human Behaviour and Psychological Defence Mechanisms

Saturday, June 13, 10:00 AM -01:30 PM

Characters, like human beings, are complex, conflicted and, in fact, contrary individuals. How have the three major theories of psychology (Behaviourism, Humanism, Psychoanalysis) explained the human psyche and human behaviour? What are the different mental and emotional mechanisms that human beings (and characters) use to hide their own feelings from themselves and from others? A basic familiarity of these can prove surprisingly useful while writing characters.

SESSION 2: What Screenwriters can Learn from Mythological Characters

Sunday, June 14, 10:00 AM -02:00 PM

The continuing relevance of mythology also stems from the underlying questions, dilemmas and challenges that its characters face, and how their responses reveal their complex, multi-dimensional personalities which resonate with our own inner selves. The plots of our epics present unending trials for the characters, uncovering layer upon surprising layer of their natures. They are perhaps the richest examples for screenwriters to study, helping them explore the depths of their own characters.

SESSION 3: The Hero’s Journey

Saturday, June 20, 10:00 AM – 01:30 PM

Joseph Campbell’s formulation of the monomyth, after collating countless ancient narratives from different cultures, became an invaluable tool for all storytellers to understand the fundamental challenges faced by a protagonist as s/he embarks on an important plot goal. While it isn’t meant to be used as a template, an exploration of the dramatic external and inner obstacles faced by the character in the Hero’s Journey offers rich insights into the series of transformations that s/he goes through while battling the plot. Extremely useful for screenwriters.

SESSION 4: Professional Guidance for Screenwriters

Sunday, June 21, 10:00 – 01:30 PM

Pitching, negotiations, contracts, disputes, legal procedures.. most screenwriters groan and grumble at these aspects of their profession. But, all of these and more are unfortunately unavoidable in the film, TV and Digital Entertainment industries. Hence it is imperative for all screenwriters to be aware of their basic rights, of important features of the Copyright Law, of contractual protocols, of how to protect their work, of the fees and credit to be expected, of how to handle disputes, and generally of everything that will help them manage their screenwriting careers.

(Advanced Scriptwriting Lectures by Anjum Rajabali)

COVID-19 Fundraiser

(Understanding Human Behaviour and Psychological Defence Mechanisms)

(What Screenwriters can Learn from Mythological Characters)

(The Hero’s Journey)

(Professional Guidance for Screenwriters)

Rest In Peace, Basu da!

Basu Chatterjee (10 January 1930 – 4 June 2020)

Basu Chatterjee, the renowned writer-director of the ’70s and ’80s, passed away on 4 June 2020 at his residence in Mumbai. He was 93 and wasn’t keeping well for quite some time due to old age.

Chatterjee was born in Ajmer, Rajasthan. He started his career as an illustrator and cartoonist with the weekly tabloid Blitz that published from Mumbai (then Bombay). After working for 18 years in print media, he changed his path and joined director Basu Bhattacharya as an assistant director for the film Teesri Kasam, in 1966, which later won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film. Basu Chatterjee eventually, made his directorial debut with Sara Akash in 1969, which won him the Filmfare Best Screenplay Award. He adapted (with Ranjit Kapoor) and directed the remake of the American film 12 Angry Men (1957), which was in turn an adaptation from a 1954 teleplay of the same name by Reginald Rose. This courtroom drama film was named Ek Ruka Hua Faisla which has acquired a cult classic status since it came out in 1986.

Chatterjee became known for his lighthearted films which had relatable characters and comic situations mostly in a middle-class set-up, like Rajinigandha, Chhoti si Baat, Chitchor, Shaukeen, Chameli Ki Shaadi among several others. He was one of the very few Indian filmmakers whose films got box office success and critical acclaim, both. While primarily being a director, he wrote dialogue and screenplay for almost two dozen Hindi films. Some of his other known films are Sara Akash, Piya Ka Ghar, Us Paar, Khatta Meetha, Priyatama, Baton Baton Mein and Apne Paraye.

Basu Chatterjee directed many Bengali films such as Hothat Brishti, Hochcheta Ki and Hothat Shei Din, as well as the popular TV shows like Byomkesh Bakshi and Rajani, for Doordarshan. In his overall career, he received seven Filmfare Awards in categories such as best film, best direction and best screenplay from 1972 to 1991. In 1992, he won the National Film Award for Best Film on Family Welfare for the film Durga while in 2007, he received the IIFA Lifetime Achievement Award.

The film industry mourned Chatterjee’s demise as Amitabh Bachchan, Anil Kapoor, Anurag Basu, Anupam Kher, Shabana Azmi, Anurag Basu, Shoojit Sircar, Divya Dutta, Jimmy Sheirgill among others took to social media to express their pain.

Amitabh Bachchan recalled working with Chatterjee in Manzil, with a Tweet – “Prayers and condolences on the passing of Basu Chatterjee .. a quiet, soft spoken, gentle human .. his films reflected the lives of middle India. Did MANZIL with him .. a sad loss …. in these climes often remembered for ‘rim jhim gire saawan’”. Anil Kapoor posted a picture of the filmmaker with the following condolence message – “A director who was always ahead of his time… Basu Chatterjee will be truly missed. He was an effortless genius and an amazing human being. May he rest in peace.”

SWA’s Hon. General Secretary Sunil Salgia paid tribute to Chatterjee on behalf of the entire Executive Committee of SWA and all its members, with these words – “He passed away who had passed the baton to me saying, ‘this boy identifies with the subject, he can direct Rajani’. It was my first meeting with him at producer Aanand Mahendroo’s office and I was launched as the director of the famous TV serial. My tribute to the legend, the master of simple yet heart touching stories that were woven around the Indian middle class life. Basu da, your films like Khatta Meetha, Chitchor, Rajnigandha, Chhoti Si Baat, Shaukeen, Baaton Baaton Mein and Priyatama will live for ever.”

The Screenwriters Association expresses its grief at the demise of Basu Chatterjee as we pray for his soul to rest in peace.

Born in Lucknow, Gaur arrived in Mumbai back in the 1960s following the death of his father. His first break as a lyricist came in the film, Sakhi Robin in 1962. However, his first big breakthrough was film Anand  which released almost a decade after he began writing songs for films, in 1971. In an interview with The Indian Express, Yogesh had shared what inspired him to write. “Jo dekhta tha, jo jeeta tha, wohi likha hai (I wrote what I saw and lived)”.

Veteran playback singer Lata Mangeshkar paid tribute to Yogesh via her Twitter accounts with the following words: “Mujhe abhi pata chala ki dil ko chunewale geet likhnewale kavi Yogesh ji ka aaj swargwas hua. Ye sunke mujhe bahut dukh hua.Yogesh ji ke likhe kai geet maine gaaye. Yogesh ji bahut shaant aur madhur swabhav ke insan the. Main unko vinamra shraddhanjali arpan karti hun.” (I just got to know about the death of Yogesh Ji who wrote many heartwarming songs. I have sung many songs written by him. He was a very calm and composed man. I pay my respects to him).”

You will be missed Yogesh ji!” Salgia said.

Urdu poet, scriptwriter and member of SWA’s Executive Committee Danish Javed expressed his sorrow on the same lines and said “Kahin Duoor Jab Din Dhal Jaaye… Apni lekhni ke zariye chamakne wala ek  sooraj aaj dhal gaya. Aah yogesh Ji….. “

On behalf of its lyricist members and the writers fraternity, the Screenwriters Association expresses its deep grief at the demise of Yogesh. He might not be with us today in body, his words will always be there to cheer us through some memorable songs. We pray for his soul to rest in peace.

An online workshop with ANJUM RAJABALI

Five compact intensive classes with the veteran screenwriter and teacher

DATES: 23, 24, 30, 31 May and 6 June 2020    |   TIME: 10.00 AM to 1.00 PM

MEDIUM OF INSTRUCTION: A mix of HINDI and ENGLISH, in equal proportion.

SESSION SCHEDULE

1. Saturday, May 23: STORYTELLING & ELEMENTS OF SCREENWRITING

2. Sunday, May 24: PLOT

3. Saturday, May 30: CHARACTER

4, Sunday, May 31: STRUCTURE

5. Saturday, June 6: SCENE DESIGN & DIALOGUE

SESSION DETAILS

1. Storytelling, stories. Introduction to screenwriting. Idea, premise.
The importance of stories – since the birth of civilization. Stories as a means of giving meaning to life. What is a screenplay? What goes into the writing of a screenplay? Screenplays are based on stories, which are based generally on a central idea. How should a screenwriter formulate that idea?
2. Plot, and the Nature of Drama
The idea has to be developed into a plot. But, what is a plot? How does that give a definition to the story, and to the characters. What is its milieu, its time and space? What do we mean by backstory? What are sub-plots?
What do we mean by drama? Why is conflict so helpful for the story, and how does it drive the narrative?
3. Character, Characterisation, Character Journey
Characters breathe life into the story, and get the viewer emotionally involved in the film. How do characters evoke empathy in the viewer? What do we mean by character transformation? What is the relationship between the plot and the character/s?
4. Structure of the Screenplay
Structure is a tool for designing your screenplay to have its desired impact on the audience. This design has to be appropriate and organic to what your story is really about. What is classical structure theory (the 3-Act Structure)? How to use that? How not to use that?
5. Scene Design & Dialogue Writing
Scenes contain the beats of your story, moving it forward with twists and turns. How does one construct them? What do you need to be mindful of when writing scenes? What really is dialogue, as opposed to conversation? How does one get characters to say what they mean, and yet fulfil the purpose of your plot?
NOTE: Participants will be required to watch some films, and scenes, before coming for these classes, as I will be referring to them often to demonstrate the validity of the theory that will be discussed.

IMPORTANT:  This is a COVID-19 fundraiser event. SWA Awards 2020 (UPDATE)

SWA Awards Rescheduled 1920 X 800Dear all,

The entire team at Screenwriters Association is wishing all of you safety and good health.

It’s been a challenging year for all, and we stand in complete solidarity with the whole fraternity.

In December 2019, we announced the first ever Screenwriting awards, with great excitement and belief that this was the year for the spotlight to shine on our writers. However, we all faced a dramatic plot twist.

But that notwithstanding, here’s information for everyone who has submitted their projects for SWA Awards 2020, for consideration in 16 award categories in Film, Television Shows, Web Series & Lyrics.

We are happy to inform you that the pre-selection and shortlisting has been completed, and the final jury panels are previewing the projects.

Due to the current circumstances we are unable to hold the Awards Ceremony on May 16th, as announced earlier.

But we will review the situation by July end and if it seems probable to host an an on-ground event in September, we will surely fulfill our resolve, failing which we will hold an online awards ceremony sometime later in the year.

An announcement regarding the same will be shared by the end of July.

Stay tuned, keep your hopes up and don’t stop putting your ideas and stories on paper!

Stay indoors & stay safe.

Rest In Peace, Rishi Kapoor!

Rishi Kapoor (4 September 1952 – 30 April 2020)

Veteran actor Rishi Kapoor passed away on 30 April 2020, in Mumbai today. He was admitted to the Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital a day ago and succumbed to complications of bone marrow cancer. He was 67 and is survived by his wife Neetu Singh, son Ranbir Kapoor and daughter Riddhima Kapoor Sahani.

Kapoor was the second son of actor-director Raj Kapoor and his wife Krishna Raj Kapoor and the grandson of actor Prithviraj Kapoor. His brothers, Randhir Kapoor and Rajiv Kapoor, maternal uncles, Prem Nath, Rajendra Nath, Narendra Nath and Prem Chopra, and paternal uncles, Shashi Kapoor and Shammi Kapoor, were also popular Hindi film actors.

Rishi Kapoor was also the paternal uncle of actresses Karisma Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor.

He had his first major role in the teen romance Bobby in 1973, which became an instant hit and established him as a leading actor.

He ended up playing the romantic lead in over 90 films between 1973 and 2000. Some of his most popular films during this period are Khel Khel Mein, Kabhi Kabhie, Amar Akbar Anthony, Karz and Chandni.

In 2010, Rishi Kapoor surprised the critics with his versatility as an actor with the film Do Dooni Chaar. He continued to play distinguished characters to critical acclaim in films like Agneepath, Mulk and Kapoor & Sons. He was last seen in film The Body, in 2019.

Rishi Kapoor received the National Film Award for Best Child Artist for his debut role in Mera Naam Joker.

He also won multiple Filmfare Awards as an actor for films Bobby, Do Dooni Chaar and Kapoor & Sons, as well as the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008. His autobiography (written with Meena Iyer) Khullam Khulla: Rishi Kapoor Uncensored was published in 2017.

Rishi Kapoor was kind to grace the concluding ceremony of 4th Indian Screenwriters Conference, organised by the Screenwriters Association, on 4 August 2016, to present the SWA Award to (Late) Vijay Anand.

The Screenwriters Association is deeply pained by the demise of Rishi Kapoor. On behalf of the writers’ fraternity we pray for his soul to rest in peace.

A statement from the Kapoor family read:

“Our dear Rishi Kapoor passed away peacefully at 8:45am IST in hospital today after a two-year battle with leukemia. The doctors and medical staff at the hospital said he kept them entertained to the last.

He remained jovial and determined to live to the fullest right through two years of treatment across two continents. Family, friends, food and films remained his focus and everyone who met him during this time was amazed at how he did not let his illness get the better of him.

He was grateful for the love of his fans that poured in from the world over. In his passing, they would all understand that he would like to be remembered with a smile and not with tears.

In this hour of personal loss, we also recognise the world is going through a very difficult and troubled time. There are numerous restrictions around movement and gathering in public. We would like to request all his fans and well-wishers and friends of the family to please respect the laws that are in force.

He would not have it any other way.”

Rest In Peace, Irrfan!

Irrfan (7 January 1967 – 29 April 2020)

Irrfan (7 January 1967 – 29 April 2020)

Renowned actor Irrfan (Khan) who was admitted to Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai in critical condition a day ago, passed away on Wednesday, 29 April 2020. The actor was under observation for colon infection. He was 53 and is survived by his wife Sutapa Sikdar, and sons Babil and Ayan.

In February 2018, Khan was diagnosed with a neuroendocrine tumour – a rare form of cancer that can target various parts of the body for which he was treated in London. Unfortunately, his heroic battle against the disease came to an end four days after his mother’s death in Jaipur, whose funeral he could not attend due to the coronavirus lockdown.

Irrfan was known for his nuanced portrayal of characters and ability to pick powerful scripts. He did a lot of unconventional films in his career, while striking a great balance with mainstream films in India as well as Hollywood. In 2012, he had changed the spelling of his name from ‘Irfan Khan’ to ‘Irrfan’ and has said he likes the sound of the extra ‘r’ in his name.

After an on-and-off career in television and a few unsuccessful films, things changed for Irrfan in 2001 with a historical festival circuit film The Warrior. In 2003, Hindi films Haasil (for which he won the Filmfare Best Villain Award) and Maqbool (an adaptation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth) established Irrfan as a special actor with rare intensity. Thereafter, he acted in several films playing lead as well as supporting and antagonistic characters.

Irrfan became a very popular Hindi film actor known for his exceptional performances in films like Rog, Paan Singh Tomar, Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns, Talvar, Haider, Hindi Medium and Piku, among others. He was also widely recognized across international film festivals due to films like The Bypass (short), Road To Laddakh (short), The Lunchbox, The Namesake and Qissa: The Tale of a Lonely Ghost. Irrfan went on to carve a niche for himself even in Hollywood with films like Slumdog Millionaire, Inferno, Jurrasic World and Life of Pi. In 2011, Irrfan was awarded the Padma Shri – India’s fourth highest civilian honour, for his contribution to the field of arts. In 2013, he earned the National Film Award for Best Actor for the sports-drama film Paan Singh Tomar. Irrfan’s last film was English Medium, which released in 2020.

The Indian film fraternity has come out to pay tribute to the versatile actor on social media, including actors like Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan and Kamal Hassan. We at the Screenwriters Association are also deeply saddened by the demise of Irrfan and express our heartfelt grief as we pray for his soul to rest in peace.

FTII OPENS ACADEMY TO TRAIN SCREENWRITERS

In a giant leap for film education, Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, has set up a training school exclusively for screenwriters, FTII VIJAY TENDULKAR WRITERS’ ACADEMY, in its Kothrud premises, away from FTII’s main campus in Pune.

On February 23, 2020, Shri B P Singh, Chairman FTII inaugurated FTII VIJAY TENDULKAR WRITERS’ ACADEMY in the presence of Mohan Agashe, actor and former Director of FTII; eminent playwright Satish Alekar; noted screenwriter, senior SWA activist and Executive Committee member Anjum Rajabali; Bhupendra Kainthola, Director FTII; R N Pathak, Registrar; Ketki Pandit, Executive Committee member of SWA and HoD, Dept of Feature Film Screenplay Writing, FTII and Prof. Sandeep Shahare, National Coordinator, SKIFT.

“The Academy is one of its kind in India. The vision of the Academy is to become an educational hub for writing for Cinema, TV and Web; with a spectrum of courses -writing short film, web series, film reviews and criticism, lyrics etc- offered for writers at various levels of experience and availability. The Academy, over a period of time, will help the industry overcome the acute shortage of good and trained screen writers.” said Chairman B P Singh while formally opening the Academy.

“Over the last three years, FTII has been making concerted and continuous efforts to democratise the film education by offering short and part-time courses to commoners across the country under SKIFT ,and opening up opportunities for thousands looking for a career in the film and television industry,” added Bhupendra Kainthola.

Ketki Pandit, who also heads the pedagogical team at the Academy, says, “To begin with, weekend and evening Courses will be launched. This will be a boon particularly for groups such as students,IT sector professionals, aspiring or struggling writers etc. The part-time programme will offer hands-on writing courses for those who have more than curiosity for screenwriting, but can’t afford to invest 2 years in the full-time screenwriting course at FTII. With significant written deliverables, the courses aim to equip the students with an understanding of the form and process, and some writing rigour. Also in planning is a web portal to conduct online courses. The setting of the Academy in an idyllic and quiet location will also help it serve as a Writer’s Retreat.”

The classrooms and staff room in FTII VIJAY TENDULKAR WRITERS’ACADEMY are named after legendary women writers, Ismat Chughtai, Durga Bhagwat, Mahashweta Devi, Amrita Pritam and Krishna Sobti.

5-DAY SCREENWRITING WORKSHOP

BY

ANJUM RAJABALI

Guest sessions by: Anubhav Sinha (Article 15), Juhi Chaturvedi (Piku), Jyoti Kapoor (Good Newwz), Niren Bhatt (Bala), Pooja Tolani (Sacred Games).

DATES: February 12-16, 2020

VENUE: 5th Veda Auditorium, Whistling Woods International, Film City Complex, Goregaon East, Mumbai – 400065

This is the 10th year of our annual national workshop on screenwriting!

What is it that keeps it going?

Owing to the huge strides that Indian cinema, web series and TV writing have been taking of late, the scope for good screenwriting has exploded. There seems to be a frenzied search for competent writers with strong fundamentals in storytelling.

If you’re an aspiring writer, now may be the time to plunge into the field. If you’re a new writer, you may want to up your game. If you’re an experienced writer, check if you’d like to revisit the fundamentals and consolidate your competence.

This time, we’re structuring it slightly differently, with an added emphasis on Scene Design, a session on Web Series, one on Mythology, a session on Psychology, and a compact session on cinematic Virtual Reality.

Gist of the curriculum:

  –   One day on the basics of storytelling as an art and craft, on IDEA, PREMISE, PLOT, CHARACTER and STRUCTURE. These are the elements powering your screenplay forward.

–   A full day dedicated to SCENE DESIGN & DIALOGUE. If your scenes don’t work, effectively everything fails.

–   A session on writing WEB SERIES, the new force in screenwriting, conducted by an experienced Series writer.

–   Half day on a basic primer on PSYCHOLOGY and the different DEFENCE MECHANISMS that people employ to hide their true feelings. Useful to create complex characters.

–   Half a day of discussion on MYTHOLOGY, it’s remarkably conflicted characters, and what we can learn from our epics, as modern screenwriters.

–   Half day dedicated to Joseph Campbell’s ‘HERO’S JOURNEY’ which offers invaluable insights into the underlying struggles and structures of all storytelling.

–   Four GUEST SESSIONS. Anubhav Sinha (Article 15), Juhi Chaturvedi (Piku), Jyoti Kapoor (Good Newwz), Niren Bhatt (Bala), Pooja Tolani (Sacred Games).

–   A session on how to PITCH YOUR SCRIPTS.

–   A one-hour session on CINEMATIC VIRTUAL REALITY, the new avenue for storytelling.

–   A session by SWA’s Lawyer on WRITERS’ RIGHTS, PLAGIARISM DISPUTES, SWA

–   A final session with SUBHASH GHAI. He speaks with utter frankness about his struggle, his successes, his failures, the absolute primacy of the script in filmmaking, and the need for writers to keep reinventing themselves.

To register for the workshop, please call 022-62716003/022-62716085 or email: kanchi.parikh@whistlingwoods.net‘

https://www.swaindia.org/blog/swa_membership_revised2019/

Screenwriters Association launches SWA Awards for Best Writing!

On the occasion of our Diamond Jubilee year, in 2020, the Screenwriters Association of India (SWA) has launched SWA Awards 2020 – the only awards in India dedicated entirely to screenwriters and lyricists of Hindi Feature Films, Television Shows and Web series.

Judged by a jury of eminent screenwriters, these awards will be the most coveted and prestigious awards for writers in India, much like the awards of other prestigious international writers’ guilds and literary organisations. The Screenwriters Association, with a membership of 30 thousand, has consistently been in the forefront of the cause of writers, proactively fighting to protect the rights of all its members. Its goal has been to get the film and TV industries to acknowledge the central role that writers play in the creation of cinema and TV shows.

While India has a plethora of awards events, by some puzzling logic, writing awards are generally relegated to the unimportant stages of the ceremony, with a generally dismissive attitude. Not just that, often the jury is forced to succumb to the organizers’ pressure to award the most popular or box-office successes.

SWA awards, on the other hand, will celebrate the outstanding writing of the year by having knowledgeable, experienced and credible writers on the jury, following a fair and accountable process of assessing, selecting and awarding quality writing. We do believe that a writer is best equipped to appreciate the nuances of the art and craft of another writer. Being judged and awarded by one’s own fraternity is indeed a writer’s greatest honour.

Current SWA President, Robin Bhatt (with more than 75 writing credits) says, “Acknowledging and awarding good writing is more than overdue in an industry that has doggedly ignored writers. SWA awards brings the writer centre-stage!”

Hon. General Secretary, Sunil Salgia says, “Applause, Praise, Appreciation and Awards are the only rewards a writer cherishes, and there can be no bigger Award than one given by your Competitors, Friends and Peers.”

For the first SWA Awards, Hindi Feature Films, Television Shows & Web series released in 2019 will be eligible to compete in 15 categories including best script, screenplay, dialog, best lyrics, and so on. While all feature films released in 2019 will automatically be considered for the awards in the Feature Film categories, submissions are right now open for Television Shows, Web series and Lyrics.

This diamond jubilee let’s celebrate the Kohinoor of content – the Screenwriter.

SWA and WIFPA sign an MoU

In its endeavour to establish amiable as well as mutually beneficial work relationships with producers’ organisations, SWA has added another feather in its cap. The Association has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Western Indian Film Producers Association (WIFPA). This agreement, signed by Shri Sunil Salgia and Shri Dilip Dalvi –  General Secretaries of SWA and WIFPA, respectively, will enable smooth functioning of a Joint Dispute Settlement Committee (JDSC) between the two bodies. The MoU broadly covers the following pointers:

  1. SWA and WIFPA will jointly resolve any disputes and claims arising amongst its members and extend support to each other to take a strong action against its respective members who are found guilty of any proven instances of default.
  2. Upon receiving a complaint against a member of the other association, the complainant’s association will immediately inform the respondent’s association of the same.
  3. Both the organisations will set up Joint Dispute Settlement Committee (JDSC) meetings to hear such above complaints and jointly resolve the dispute.
  4. Decisions of the JDSC shall be binding on the complainant and respondent.
  5. If the JDSC is unable to arrive at a consensus, the respective associations may guide their concerned members regarding how to proceed with the matter.
  6. Both the associations will ensure compliance of their respective members to the decisions of JDSC. In case a member of either association refuses to comply then, the association of the defaulting member shall take a strict disciplinary action.

SWA and CINTAA sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU)

As per the announcement made in the second week of September, the Screenwriters Association (SWA) and Cine and Television Artistes Association (CINTAA) have now signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). This agreement, agreed and accepted by Shri Sunil Salgia and Shri Sushant Singh –  General Secretaries of SWA and CINTAA, respectively, will address all kinds of violations, be it sexual harassment, copyright infringement, payment or breach of contract involving the members of both the Associations.

The following are the salient pointers of the MoU:

SWA and CINTAA will collaborate with each other and stand in solidarity regarding any issues involving the welfare and well-being of its members. Especially, if any representation to the government or other authority is required in this regard, SWA and CINTAA shall support each other’s representation before such authority.

  • SWA and CINTAA will take the required steps and efforts to educate its members regarding good practices to be observed in the industry, particularly, to uphold and respect the rights and dignity of other members (specifically including but not limited to sexual harassment, copyright violation and/or non-payment of dues) and where necessary, collaborate in organizing, arranging and conducting programmes, workshops and seminars or any other kinds of events for imparting such education and awareness among its respective members.
  • In case of any proven instances of misconduct against or breach of any rights of the members of SWA or CINTAA, relating to or occurring during their course of discharge of professional work and duties, both the associations shall extend support to each other and stand in solidarity with each other to condemn all such proven instances of wrongdoings.
  • In case of any disputes between the members of both the associations, the parties shall arrange a joint meeting of their respective Dispute Settlement Committees. The members concerning such dispute from both the associations shall have a moral obligation to attend the Joint DSC meetings taking place between the signing associations.
  • If members of either association violate the rights or dignity of the members of the other association, the concerned association of the defaulter member shall take all measures to encourage and/or compel its defaulter member to participate in the mediation process of the complainant’s association. If such defaulter member refuses or refrains from participating in the dispute resolution process of the complainant’s association, or if the dispute resolution body of the complainant’s association finds that the defaulter member is indeed in default, then the defaulter member’s association shall take strict action against such defaulter for such wrongdoings.
  • The dispute settlement body of the complainant’s association shall have the jurisdiction to conduct mediation if the complaint is pertaining to the particular craft of the association and the defaulter member’s association shall respect and abide by the findings and decision of the complainant’s association. (e.g. if the dispute has arisen in the complainant’s capacity as a writer or in the course of work of the complainant providing his/her services as a writer, then SWA’s dispute settlement body shall have the jurisdiction to entertain the dispute; vice versa for CINTAA if the dispute arises out of the complainant’s course of work as an artist or in relation to the complainant’s services as an artist).
  • If the dispute concerns the members of both the associations in their capacities as a writer and artist, then, the defaulter member shall have the right to request the representation of their association in the dispute settlement process, in which case, there may be a JDSC meeting to resolve the dispute. However, such JDSC meeting shall not take place for any complaints pertaining to sexual harassment. Complaints pertaining to sexual harassment shall strictly be handled by the concerned association of the aggrieved person.
  • Wherever mutually beneficial, the associations shall collaborate and provide support to each other for any other matters not specifically mentioned herein. The parties are free to add any further points to the MOU as and when required through mutual consent. (This MOU shall not be a commitment of funds to either party on behalf of the other party or any disclosure or transfer of intellectual property rights, or any other proprietary information.)
