Rishi Kapoor (4 September 1952 – 30 April 2020)

Veteran actor Rishi Kapoor passed away on 30 April 2020, in Mumbai today. He was admitted to the Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital a day ago and succumbed to complications of bone marrow cancer. He was 67 and is survived by his wife Neetu Singh, son Ranbir Kapoor and daughter Riddhima Kapoor Sahani.

Kapoor was the second son of actor-director Raj Kapoor and his wife Krishna Raj Kapoor and the grandson of actor Prithviraj Kapoor. His brothers, Randhir Kapoor and Rajiv Kapoor, maternal uncles, Prem Nath, Rajendra Nath, Narendra Nath and Prem Chopra, and paternal uncles, Shashi Kapoor and Shammi Kapoor, were also popular Hindi film actors.

Rishi Kapoor was also the paternal uncle of actresses Karisma Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor.

He had his first major role in the teen romance Bobby in 1973, which became an instant hit and established him as a leading actor.

He ended up playing the romantic lead in over 90 films between 1973 and 2000. Some of his most popular films during this period are Khel Khel Mein, Kabhi Kabhie, Amar Akbar Anthony, Karz and Chandni.

In 2010, Rishi Kapoor surprised the critics with his versatility as an actor with the film Do Dooni Chaar. He continued to play distinguished characters to critical acclaim in films like Agneepath, Mulk and Kapoor & Sons. He was last seen in film The Body, in 2019.

Rishi Kapoor received the National Film Award for Best Child Artist for his debut role in Mera Naam Joker.

He also won multiple Filmfare Awards as an actor for films Bobby, Do Dooni Chaar and Kapoor & Sons, as well as the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008. His autobiography (written with Meena Iyer) Khullam Khulla: Rishi Kapoor Uncensored was published in 2017.

Rishi Kapoor was kind to grace the concluding ceremony of 4th Indian Screenwriters Conference, organised by the Screenwriters Association, on 4 August 2016, to present the SWA Award to (Late) Vijay Anand.

The Screenwriters Association is deeply pained by the demise of Rishi Kapoor. On behalf of the writers’ fraternity we pray for his soul to rest in peace.

A statement from the Kapoor family read:

“Our dear Rishi Kapoor passed away peacefully at 8:45am IST in hospital today after a two-year battle with leukemia. The doctors and medical staff at the hospital said he kept them entertained to the last.

He remained jovial and determined to live to the fullest right through two years of treatment across two continents. Family, friends, food and films remained his focus and everyone who met him during this time was amazed at how he did not let his illness get the better of him.

He was grateful for the love of his fans that poured in from the world over. In his passing, they would all understand that he would like to be remembered with a smile and not with tears.

In this hour of personal loss, we also recognise the world is going through a very difficult and troubled time. There are numerous restrictions around movement and gathering in public. We would like to request all his fans and well-wishers and friends of the family to please respect the laws that are in force.

He would not have it any other way.”

Rest In Peace, Irrfan!

Irrfan (7 January 1967 – 29 April 2020)

Irrfan (7 January 1967 – 29 April 2020)

Renowned actor Irrfan (Khan) who was admitted to Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai in critical condition a day ago, passed away on Wednesday, 29 April 2020. The actor was under observation for colon infection. He was 53 and is survived by his wife Sutapa Sikdar, and sons Babil and Ayan.

In February 2018, Khan was diagnosed with a neuroendocrine tumour – a rare form of cancer that can target various parts of the body for which he was treated in London. Unfortunately, his heroic battle against the disease came to an end four days after his mother’s death in Jaipur, whose funeral he could not attend due to the coronavirus lockdown.

Irrfan was known for his nuanced portrayal of characters and ability to pick powerful scripts. He did a lot of unconventional films in his career, while striking a great balance with mainstream films in India as well as Hollywood. In 2012, he had changed the spelling of his name from ‘Irfan Khan’ to ‘Irrfan’ and has said he likes the sound of the extra ‘r’ in his name.

After an on-and-off career in television and a few unsuccessful films, things changed for Irrfan in 2001 with a historical festival circuit film The Warrior. In 2003, Hindi films Haasil (for which he won the Filmfare Best Villain Award) and Maqbool (an adaptation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth) established Irrfan as a special actor with rare intensity. Thereafter, he acted in several films playing lead as well as supporting and antagonistic characters.

Irrfan became a very popular Hindi film actor known for his exceptional performances in films like Rog, Paan Singh Tomar, Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns, Talvar, Haider, Hindi Medium and Piku, among others. He was also widely recognized across international film festivals due to films like The Bypass (short), Road To Laddakh (short), The Lunchbox, The Namesake and Qissa: The Tale of a Lonely Ghost. Irrfan went on to carve a niche for himself even in Hollywood with films like Slumdog Millionaire, Inferno, Jurrasic World and Life of Pi. In 2011, Irrfan was awarded the Padma Shri – India’s fourth highest civilian honour, for his contribution to the field of arts. In 2013, he earned the National Film Award for Best Actor for the sports-drama film Paan Singh Tomar. Irrfan’s last film was English Medium, which released in 2020.

The Indian film fraternity has come out to pay tribute to the versatile actor on social media, including actors like Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan and Kamal Hassan. We at the Screenwriters Association are also deeply saddened by the demise of Irrfan and express our heartfelt grief as we pray for his soul to rest in peace.
